WEEKEND RETREAT with Bailey Rivera from Antiquaria

Rare Opportunity to Learn Spencerian Calligraphy
Saturday & Sunday October 28th & 29th

Spencerian Script is a uniquely American form of cursive handwriting that was developed in the 19th century by PR Spencer, Sr. It was based on the graceful ovals and curvatures he observed in nature. Prior to that English roundhouse style was the norm. The emergence of Spencerian script would usher in the ‘Golden Age’ of ornamental penmanship in the United States. This period would extend through the early portion of the 20th century. It, along with Roundhouse script and all calligraphy styles, are the precursors to modern calligraphy. It was re-introduced to America by Michael Sull with his contemporary books and study materials on the subject. Additional information on the style can only be found in vintage books from around 1850-1940 or so.  Spencerian teachers are few and far between, with less than 10 in the United States. Join us as we welcome Bailey Rivera of Antiquaria to share her talents in Spencerian Script and more. Since starting her calligraphy practice in 2009, she has extensively studied many different calligraphy styles, both pointed pen and broad edge. She has trained with some of the most renowned calligraphers, including;  Master Penman Harvest Crittenden, Master Penman Jake Weidmann, Master Penman Rosemary Buczek, Michael Ward, Dennis Brown, Sharon Zeugin, Yves Leterme, as well as many others. Because of the diversity of her training, and her continuous study of traditional script calligraphy and penmanship, Bailey's professional lettering work is distinctive and unique.

Intro to Spencerian Script: Lowercase a-z
Spencerian was developed as a system of practical penmanship for businessmen in the 19th century. During the Golden Age of writing (late 1800's-early 1900's) it was an admired and very esteemed profession to be a penman. This light, airy and practical style is beautiful in it's simplicity and can also be highly embellished for more ornate work. This class will introduce the foundation of Spencerian writing with the lowercase letters a-z.  -Oblique or Straight Holder -Nibs -Ink –Paper, Guidelines  -Writing Surface
